Personality;
Minatsuki’s character varies greatly over the duration of the Deadman Wonderland story. In a nutshell, I think her personality can be described as a rose with thorns. She may seem sweet and innocent just from a mere glance, but if not handled carefully, can be harmful--very harmful, mainly for the fact that she is a terribly sadistic and vulgar girl half the time. The rest of the time, she’s not as exaggeratedly crazy but still rather bitchy.
In the beginning, when Minatsuki is introduced to the main character, Ganta, she appears to be a sweet, innocent and somewhat damaged young girl--extremely out of place, since she’s in a prison of all things, so of course there’s something off about this persona. The truth is, she uses this pure façade to lure people into a false sense of security. This can be seen canon in chapter 9 when she interacts with Ganta and displays that sweet attitude in order for him to trust her and not view her as a threat. Her true wicked nature is revealed later on in the same chapter when the two are pitted against each other in the prison’s famed Carnival Corpse death match. During this time she is shown to be ruthless and insane, using vulgar language and displaying several crazy, twisted facial expressions. Her backstory is also revealed during this time.
Her history reveals that she’s a crafty liar and is very reluctant to trust others. Part of the story of Deadman Wonderland is that a terrible earthquake of great magnitude shook the Tokyo ten years prior to when the story began, and Minatsuki was one of the victims during this event. She had been tending to the flowers in a nursery with her mother when the earthquake hit and wrecked the room, resulting in Minatsuki being trapped under debris while her mother was not. Though, instead of helping her child as any parent should, her mother ran away to save herself and left Minatsuki to die alone. Her mother ended up dying, a fate Minatsuki believed the woman deserved for abandoning her, and she was able to get out alive and unharmed. Despite emerging from this tragic event better for the wear, this is when she stopped trusting in people and began lying. This was also when she learned that she had the abilities of a Deadman and could use the Branch of Sin known as Whip Wing, in which her blood attaches to her hair and extends in the form of whips that can slice and constrict objects.
Minatsuki lived with her father and older brother in the years that followed the earthquake, and she began to display her sadistic behavior early on. In the manga, her older brother Yoh mentions something about a dog who crushed her beloved flowers ending up dead, implying that she was the cause of its death. He also hints that she was the reason her school counselor had a horrible accident. It is also revealed that her reason for being in the prison is that she killed her father, whom she attempted to seduce before her brother walked in on the scene. He attempted to kill his father for this, but Minatsuki’s Whip Wing was faster--she killed her father before her brother could and thus was jailed and sent to Deadman Wonderland. On the topic of her brother, she scornfully refers to him as a sister complex and doesn’t treat him kindly, even going so far as to use him as a human shield during Carnival Corpse. This changes, however, when he swears to protect her no matter what, even after he discovers her true nature. Yoh’s actions during this time, along with Ganta’s victory during the match, lead to a drastic change in her character.
When Ganta valiantly attempts to save his friend Yoh without hitting him while Minatsuki is holding him hostage, he criticizes her for being so untrustworthy and violent, claiming that her bad attitude only harms herself. Instead of trying to kill her or maim her during the match, he simply wins by head butting her and knocking her out cold—something pretty much unseen in these kill-or-be-killed battles. Later on, after the match, when Minatsuki is still out cold and resting in her cell, a minor earthquake strikes. The tremors knock a heavy cabinet off balance that is about to fall on her and crush her, but her brother stops it before it can crush her, becoming injured in the process. All of these events soften Minatsuki’s harsh exterior and allow her to begin putting a bit of trust in others. This is even further enabled when Ganta takes part in helping to sabotage the punishment game that came about from Minatsuki’s loss in the Carnival Corpse match. Instead of losing a limb or organ or something else gruesome that was the usual game, she only gets some of her hair cut off. After this, she finally realizes that there are some people she can put her trust or hopes in and a softer, sweeter side of her is revealed.
Minatsuki is shown early on to have a love for flowers. Her prison cell is filled with primroses, and she is also shown to be knowledgeable of the language of flowers. She also wears a flower hairpin on the left side of her head. This in itself might express a caring side of her character, since tending to flowers is a delicate process that takes time and patience. Aside from that, her most prominent trait is being sadistic. At times, when she is near the Deadman named Crow, who is well-known to become flustered around women when they are wearing anything even slightly provocative, she flashes her underwear at him just to see him suffer. This makes it seem like she doesn’t have an ounce of modesty, and this is further proved when Ganta walks in on her changing and instead of blushing or covering up, she threatens him violently and with a dark tone. Though in another situation similar to this, when her brother attempts to help her get ready for a bath when she’s injured, she violently kicks him out of the room and appears flustered. Her reactions vary from character to character.
After all of that, any other time Minatsuki appears in the manga, she is much tamer than before and rather nonchalant (but no less sadistic). She is shown several times with her brother, whom she cares deeply for despite making fun of him and calling him a sister complex--he’s the only family she has left, after all, and possibly the only one she can fully put her trust in. It is also shown later that she has come to care even for Ganta (though, she probably wouldn‘t admit it any time soon)--and possibly even view him as a friend--when he is in danger and she joins the other Deadmen when they rush to his aid.
Minatsuki can be difficult and intolerable with her attitude at times, but it’s shown later during a fight with the forgery Deadmen in chapter 33 that she has a solid, iron determination and cannot be easily tricked. In this battle against the forgery Deadman, Sumeragi Uzume, Minatsuki is thrust into an illusion that relives her worst nightmare--the day her mother abandoned her during the earthquake. Her mother is shown to be loving and kind, but then becomes warped and attempts to kill herself and her daughter because she loves her and wants to spare her the pain and suffering. Minatsuki is able to discredit this all as an illusion and break free from it because her strong opinion that her mother is a rotten bitch can’t be swayed.
In recent chapters, Minatsuki appears to have calmed down even more, almost resembling a normal seventeen year old girl aside from the fact that she has a few murders on her resume… She is also shown to be more considerate and loyal towards her friends. When her friend Shiro’s true nature is revealed, she isn’t afraid to appear vulnerable and shed a few tears over the girl’s twisted predicament as the subject of a mad scientist. Later on, in chapter 49, she is shown openly cheering for her friends Ganta and Senji after their battle with Hagire, unashamed to tell them that they are badass, and looking very happy when she says so. At this point, she seems to have become far more honest with herself and her feelings.

Well—looks like there's no one around to take care of you anymore. Can't blame 'em, really, you're a pretty weird little guy. All scaly and round...a-and...not...not entirely uncute...! [Here she can be seen blushing slightly, but frowning.]A-anyways, you're pretty abandoned right now. Dunno if anyone I know would want a pet...
Sigh. I guess I'll have to do it, since there's no one else. Sheesh, don't you know I have better things to do? What's your name, anyways...? [She stares down at the armadillo, far from amused, when suddenly it curls into a ball and slips off of her lap, rolling along the floor.]
Pff....Pffha...puahahaha! What the hell was that?! You just—ahaha! [She looks very happy and amused now, a rare expression. She steps towards the armadillo, which had rolled to a stop beside the camera, where she notices a flashing light. Her smile drops, and her expression turns grim.]
It...it was on...the whole time? What kind of bullshit--[Her red, flustered face is the last thing the camera sees before everything fizzes away into white noise.]

Just about the only thing Minatsuki missed about that old corrupt shit hole Deadman Wonderland was the small greenhouse-nursery she had to leave behind. All of those flowers she'd painstakingly taken care of were abandoned, probably wilted right now. The fact that something she worked so hard to nurture had been destroyed royally pissed her off, to be frank. But what was worse was the fact that the prison she'd been transferred to—the boring, conventional prison—prohibited her from having any potted plants in her small, normal prison cell. Just what the fuck did they think she'd be doing with flowers that was illegal or potentially dangerous, anyways? It wasn't like she would use the stem or thorns to shank one of the other inmates, or something. Well...as long as they didn't call for it, at least--y'know, self-defense and all that. She wasn't a pushover, and had the scars to prove it. But, ha, she didn't think any of them would have the balls to mess with her anyways, with her Deadman reputation and all. If anything, they should give her what she wanted so she wouldn't go berserk on 'em all. Not that she would ever waste her time and energy on something so stupid...
What was really bothering her right now, though, was that this peaceful, safe prison life was totally boring compared to that carnage she was so well-acquainted with. Every day had been a life-or-death struggle back then. It was exciting. It was dangerous. No one gave a fuck if you lived or died, it was just survival of the fittest, no hard feelings. Sometimes she missed the adrenaline rush, but like hell she wanted to go back to that kind of shitty life! Old habits were just hard to forget, sometimes. Now, she had something to live for; something to look forward to after she carried out her sentence. Her friends, her family. For that, she was willing to suffer through this plain punishment.
